stairs by ariel

ariel (aka "man o' steel") - just like the rsq family, ariel is one of the rare individuals we've met along our journey who enjoys his craft, is extremely patient and really thrives on customer satisfaction...he's the man to call for custom steel fabrication!

bulthaup (bull-top)

so we did things a bit backwards...this is the kitchen that the house was designed for. it was originally for our previous home where we had intended on doing a major remodel--kitchen, bath, addition. we made it all the way to permit approval but then plan B came into effect--build from the ground up. the kitchen was already ordered, however, so it went immediately into storage for the next 2 1/2 years! bulthaup kitchens are fairly modular so we knew it could go with us wherever we went...(i actually teared up when the boxes were delivered)

Ipe (eee-pay) rainscreen

it took 5 days to get the ipe installed but, hopefully, we never have to replace it in our lifetime (resists dry rot, mold, termites).

the cavalry arrived to help Rob--his dad Lou, Uncle Sil, Antonio.

even though the ipe load came in random lengths, we're proud to say there was little waste left after the siding was complete --rob and chris separated the boards and we put our math skills to work. our college 'edumacation' paid off...

To be or not to be...Green?

we couldn't afford to go 100% green (let's face it, you need mucho green/$$ to be green) but we spent a good chunk of our budget on a few 'sustainable' items

"cool roof" by duro-last (energy star-rated, 20+ years lifetime, recyclable materials)

Icynene (spray foam insulation a ceiling)

lime plaster (reabsorbs most of the CO2 during the curing process, recyclable, used for centuries in europe due to its long lifespan)
rain screen with VaproShield

"no-show"

It may not look like it but a lot has been done since our last post. The concrete slab downstairs was poured and polished smooth (it will be our finished floor).

and AHHHH, those windows...blomberg, schlomberg...milgard suits us just fine (and about 1/3 the cost)
